The Secret Meaning
Believe it or not, there are actually quite a few meanings behind this marvelous piece of art. Some say that the meaning behind this painting is religious, and some say that this painting was used to truly capture Van Gogh's deep inner emotions while he was in an Asylum. In my opinion, I would have to agree with the group of individuals who say that meaning behind this painting is religious. The religious meaning behind this painting has to do with a letter that Vincent had written some time before. In the letter Vincent wrote he described "a great starlit vault of heaven.. one can only call God." Van Gogh was also very religious himself so that also pushed a lot of art critics to believe in this "Religious meaning."

Another aspect of the religious meaning that I found, had to do with the number of stars in the sky which lead some art critics to a certain bible passage:
"Look, I have dreamed another dream. And this time, the sun, the moon and the eleven stars bowed down to me." Genesis 37:9
